The profound renewal of cabinet-making, first Lombard, then national and then European, came with the gradual abandonment of the Rococo style of the late eighteenth century. The Lombard production of inlaid furniture lasted until the Forties/Fifties of the nineteenth century, concentrating in half a century extraordinary examples of this happy change. The undisputed protagonist of the neoclassical Milan art scene was Giuseppe Maggiolini, the first cabinetmaker to be defined, by contemporary sources, artist. Already active in the late eighteenth century, Beetles soon shelved the repetitive Rococo language thanks to the convocation at the court of Ferdinand of Habsburg, Archduke settled in the city of Milan in the seventies. In this illuminated context Maggiolini had the opportunity to collaborate with the most up-to-date exponents of the artistic and architectural field, involved in the archducal construction sites of today’s Palazzo Ducale in Milan and Monza.
The present, clearly invented in Lombardy, reflects the incisiveness of Maggiolini’s art: in a subtle game of sinuous symmetries, bold ornamental modules around a central octagon are depicted. The perimeter plates inside the walnut slab are enriched with phytomorphic volutes elaborated in an alternation of flowers and lobed leaves; the presence of newts holding racemes in the largest segment and dolphins from the tail rolled up at the corners of the octagon outline contribute to visually accenting the main composition, consisting of flower and racemes radiating. The boxwood thread defines the liveliness of the colors of cherry wood and bois de rose, accentuating in vibrant alternation the preciousness of the artifact. The elegance of the coffee table is enhanced by the legs made of a spool, with a small nut which is joined by a wavy leaf, evocative visual lightness. It is possible to compare the solutions devised from the present with the drawings of the workshop of Beetles, now kept in the Cabinet of Drawings in Milan (but v. also G. Beretti, A. González-Palacios, Giuseppe Maggiolini. Catalogue raisonné of the drawings, Milan 2014).
